Notorious pirate, Captain Kidd, is known to have sailed the waters of Long Island Sound during his tenure as a privateer and a pirate in the late 18th century. Legend has it that he buried his treasure in the outlying islands off the coasts of Long Island and Connecticut, including the Thimble Islands and Charles Island. Only the treasure buried on Gardiner's Island was ever discovered.
